COTE: meeting the 4th Wednesday of each month, 6:30pm
Holmes & Watson's - Broadway, Troy, NY

The Local AIAENY COTE is not limited to AIA members or even to building professionals. We intend to create greener opportunities for ourselves, our professions, our neighborhoods, and our environment.

If you have an interest in sustainable practices, a COTE meeting is the place to talk about and plan for the challenges that we can undertake. We have many goals, from the lofty to the immediately achievable:

  • Create a knowledge base for local green materials for architects, contractors, engineers.
  • Address waste in K-12 schools. Teach a school how to improve its daily practices for the well-being of the earth and the bottom line.
  • Work with grassroots education - stick with the people who have their hands on this stuff. Bottom up education.
  • Create a measurement index for ourselves - we need to see our efforts are causing improvement and growth.
  • Keep each other's energy up.
  • Educate the world.
  • Be an information source for ourselves.
  • Provide support for presentations and speeches.
  • Become an experienced resource for others re: LEED process.
  • Find media to use to feed this stuff out - alumni magazines, local papers, library speeches, TV covered events.

"Our intent is to get more people of the community involved in the practice of long term sustainability by giving them access to resources and to inspiration."

Communications

Salvatore Renda, AIA

The chapter issues notification of programs and announcements through facsimiles and e-mail messages to chapter members as well as maintains this web site.

Design Awards
TBD

The design awards committee organizes a design program every other year to recognize architecture of merit designed by chapter members. Presentation of the awards is held at a dinner ceremony.

Fellowship Search
Patrick Quinn, FAIA

The chapter encourages active recruitment of potential candidates for the FAIA. With the help of existing Fellows, the Board of Directors and volunteer chapter members, it is the chapterīs intent to assist the potential candidates in their nomination and election.

Government Affairs
David Pacheco, AIA

The government affairs committee organizes the chapterīs presence in the State and local political scene by participating in the annual Lobby Day, for the State in early May. The AIA New York State, the statewide body, annually publishes and distributes to local chapters a legislative program, which includes a list of pending bills of strategic interest to the architectural profession. The AIA NYS provides, additionally, a brochure with extensive descriptions to the pending bills and their relevance to the profession as well as helpful guidelines on Lobby Day procedures.

Mentorship
TBD

The chapter conducts Registration Exam seminars for architectural interns throughout the year. The recent enactment of the IDP program will invariably require both employees and employers to pay greater attention to the professional development of those seeking licensure. The chapter is encouraging all members to develop mentorship programs in their offices.

Newsletter
James Comegys, AIA

The newsletter committee publishes a chapter wide newsletter every other month to inform members of local events and issues concerning the architectural profession. The chairperson will coordinate assemblage of articles and notices, as well as report to the Executive Committee on the progress of each of the newsletters. The chairperson is also responsible for maintaining and expanding the advertising base.

Programs
Jeff Mural, AIA

Every year the chapter organizes various educational programs. The chapter is authorized to appoint continuing education credits to these programs. By attending, chapter members refresh their knowledge or learn more on specific areas of the construction industry, as well as, earn CES credits. Tours of recently completed buildings are held every year. Product manufacturers sponsor seminars where they present issues on special topics and are able to present their product. The AIA will also bring in experts in the field to speak on issues, such as, design-build, liability insurance, building codes and the ADA standards.

Public Relations
David Pacheco, AIA

The chapter strives to maintain a presence in the local community civically as well as professionally. Through involvement in various community organized programs, the AIA supports areas of need in education, design and construction.

Student Chapter
TBD

The Student Chapter Committee provides a forum for the educational and working worlds. Through the voices of RPI students and the young architects in the AIA, we hope to create a constant dialogue through lectures, mentorship, community service, and professional practice.
